Pass the sun cream! How to turn your home into a tropical paradise

With Winter a long, distant memory, the nights are lighter and longer, the days are brighter, and the sun actually has some warmth in it! With that in mind, it’s time to banish that plain old paint, evict those boring throws and get some tropical style and decor in your life. After all, if you can’t go to the tropics, you can bring the tropics to you!

Your garden

Let’s start outdoors! Let’s face it, with some approaching you’re going to be spending most of your time out there anyway! If you’re wanting some tropical feels in your garden (and your climate allows it) consider planting some gorgeous tropical flowers and big, leafy palms! That way, whenever you look out of your window you’ll feel summery and tropical. If you don’t have much of an outdoor space, then decorate every room with a big tropical plant. Check out this website for some more plant ideas.

If you’re really feeling adventurous then why not create your very own tiki bar? Ideal for entertaining and a fun addition to any garden, all you’ll need is some weathered timber for the bar, and some palm thatch or banana leaf for the roof. Add your own furniture and bottles and voila!

And don’t forget to designate a siesta spot! If you can find the right place, don’t forget to hang a hammock. Or create a sheltered area with an outdoor bed. Perfect for dreaming of a tropical island.

Your furniture

An entire room can have a tropical swoop with one easy change. Ditch those leather and fabric sofas and try something a little beachier instead. Rattan or bamboo furniture will give any room an instant holiday feel. Or if you’d rather adapt the furniture you already have then try upcycling.

Get yourself some tropical print and reupholster your chairs, or even your head board. You don’t have to hunt through a haberdashery for a banana or pineapple print – colours like yellow or sea foam green are perfect. These fantastic pops of colour are subtle and refreshing in a modern home with clean lines.

You could do the basic thing and add shells of all shapes and sizes throughout your home. Or if you wanted to take it a step further, try hanging an old birdcage in your living room! This ornate accessory will have you dreaming of parrots and exotic animals. But don’t worry, you don’t have to get the parrot too – fill these with candles or other tropical themed accessories.

The hallway

Let your guests know what their in for when they step into your new tropical paradise; don’t forget about your hallway! Make the entrance to your home bold and exciting; even if you create a simple feature wall with wallpaper that has a tropical motif. And don’t forget to build up your tropical theme with curios and accessories – and maybe even a woven basket to throw your keys into!
