Google adds IMAP to gmail

Oct 2007 23 – Filed under code

Looks like Google has finally added IMAP support to gmail. Found out today via Gruber’s twitter and then noticed that Slashdot just noted it today.

This sorta makes my whole gmail/IMAP/iPhone instructions obsolete except for the whole using gmail as an archive thing. If you use gmail’s IMAP directly (rather then a routed approach like mine) you still have the problem of it downloading all your messages.

As such, I’m not currently planning on switching over to this from my own system. Another issue is that I wouldn’t be able just read/respond/delete as I have been doing, since I’d be deleting off of what is now my main archive. Actually reading this it looks like delete just acts like archive unless a mail is spam or in trash. Also you’d still need to send out through your other account if you wanted to use a different header email, since Exchange doesn’t like emails sent through gmai with a different header.

However, this does open up the possibility of using a different gmail account as the iphone IMAP pool for people who were hunting for an IMAP account but still like my system.

Healthy iPhone

In light of the recent Greanpeace health report on the iPhone (view the PDF of Full Report), I’ve taken the proactive stance and created a health warning for use as my iPhone wallpaper.

I am releasing this wallpaper to the world in order to do my part in saving us all from the iPhone health menace! By downloading and installing this image as the wallpaper of your iPhone, you’ll be proactively protecting the health of babies and lab rats everywhere!

28X airport express

Notice the smile? That’s what happens when the bus is on time and leaves on time and has nice padded seats. Granted the 28X is a airport express bus but still it’s quite nicer then my public transit experience in Oakland.

I’ve had a lovely trip so far and I’m glad I didn’t lug the laptop. The iPhone is quite fine. Must say it is rather odd being away with the whole twitter thing. I know the gist of everything my friends are doing back there on the west coast — and the gaps in my knowledge are more apperant because of it.

Morley and I fit a lot in to the past couple days. A little sightseeing and Italian food in the Strip District, line dancing to crazy gypsy music, drinks at an awesomely decorated club (what Noc Noc should look like), and a wonderful excursion through the autumn tinged countryside to fallingwater. I’ve come away with a excellent feel for Pittsburgh.

I’m writing this on the aforementioned bus on the way to the airport to pick up my rental.* Heading to Stubenville to see my grandparents.

*note thrifty’s website is clean and functional and works really well on the iPhone even over Edge. Dollar’s on the otherhand is unusuable on the iPhone.

MUNI was late by 15min as per norm. I got to the airport on time still but ended up being the second to last in line. The last guy in line was also playing with his iphone — i wonder what the correlation is between iphone users and tardiness.

I’m packed light which helped as I didn’t need to check any bags. No need for my laptop now that I have my iPhone. Converted a movie to iPhone format for the plane flight — wish i had time to put another movie on it though. Also organized a couple slideshows which are on both the iPhone and on a separate thumb drive for use on any computer. For music I have my iPhone with my recent favs, plus my 3G iPod with the bulk of my collection (though the battery is on it weaker than anorexic stranded on a desert isle), plus my shuffle for times when I want to save battery life on the former devices.

Mmmm gadgets. They make air travel bareable.

Green Man was less trashy than last year

5666 – Cleanup Inspection
Originally uploaded by DangerRanger

According to Danger Ranger, playa cleanup wasn’t too bad this year in spite of the record turnout. Frankly I’m surprised yet pleased. Also pretty cool is that “the Bureau of Land Management has adopted the Burning Man standard for Leave No Trace and now requires all large scale events held on public lands in the United States to meet this level of clean up.”

Very much in contrast to the anti-leave-no-trace trash heap that was post-folsom streeet fair. We of Prim Queer Tea did our best to clean up our area, which left a clean blank spot surrounded by fliers, plastic beer cups, and assorted trash.
